About Us

Adopt a Grandparent began with something very real. Time spent together.

Before it was a charity, it was a childhood shaped by being surrounded by older people. Shaleeza Hasham grew up on the grounds of her family’s care home, where companionship and conversation were part of everyday life.

She did not grow up with just two grandparents. She grew up with many.

She saw what it meant to feel included and listened to. Later, she saw the quieter moments too. The residents without regular visitors. The people who were cared for but still felt alone.

That contrast led to the creation of Adopt a Grandparent.

Launched in 2019, the charity was built to create meaningful relationships between older people and the wider community.

Then the world changed.

When Covid-19 reached the UK, care homes closed their doors. In an instant, visits stopped. Familiar faces disappeared. In response, Adopt a Grandparent moved online, creating a safe way to match older people with volunteers across the UK and beyond.

Distance no longer mattered. What mattered was this. Someone showed up. Someone listened. Someone remembered.

That remains at the heart of everything we do today.

Care homes do an incredible job. What we offer is something alongside that care: one-to-one relationships and consistent conversation.

That is why we exist. To make sure no older person feels forgotten, one conversation at a time.
