Teen Volunteer Forms Special Bond with 77-Year-Old Adopted Grandparent
At Adopt A Grandparent, we love seeing the power of conversation bring generations together. One of our most heartwarming connections is that of 14-year-old Daniel Dominick and 77-year-old Linda Jones, a resident at Acorn Lodge care home – part of Avery Healthcare. Their story is a true testament to the difference intergenerational friendships can make in tackling loneliness.
Daniel joined us as a Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) volunteer while working towards his Silver Award. With family members living abroad, he understands how important connection is and wanted to make a difference for someone who may not have regular companionship. When we introduced him to Linda, a retired state-registered nurse with a love for reading, gardening, and socialising, their friendship quickly flourished.
Despite their 63-year age difference, Daniel and Linda found so much in common. Their calls have become a highlight for both of them, with Daniel sharing how much he looks forward to their conversations, describing Linda as "amazing." For Linda, who has always enjoyed meeting new people, their chats have brought laughter, warmth, and a new sense of companionship into her daily routine.
Linda has a passion for china collecting and storytelling, while Daniel enjoys history, sports, and travel. Their conversations touch on everything from school activities to their favourite hobbies, proving that friendship knows no age and that meaningful connections can be built across generations.
At AAG, we work hard to create thoughtful, hand-picked pairings like Daniel and Linda’s, ensuring safe, engaging, and life-enhancing interactions. Our unique approach combines these manual matches with an AI-powered platform, providing a secure space for volunteers and grandparents to connect, share, and form lasting bonds.
Our Founder and CEO, Shaleeza Hasham, reflects on the impact of these relationships:
"Daniel and Linda’s story is a beautiful reminder of how much we can learn from one another, regardless of age. At AAG, we’re not just fostering companionship; we’re creating moments of joy, understanding, and shared experiences that leave a lasting impact. The enthusiasm and kindness that young volunteers like Daniel bring to the programme prove that even the smallest conversations can make the biggest difference."
With more young volunteers signing up every day – including many through the Duke of Edinburgh programme – we continue to expand our reach, connecting generations and transforming lives.
If you’d like to be part of this movement and bring joy to an older person’s life, we’d love to hear from you. Find out more at www.adoptagrandparent.org.uk.
