Celebrating Global Intergenerational Week with Adopt A Grandparent

As we mark Global Intergenerational Week, we’re taking the opportunity to shine a light on something simple – yet life-changing: the impact of connection between generations.

At Adopt A Grandparent, we believe that meaningful relationships between younger and older people don’t just brighten someone’s day – they transform lives. Our programme pairs care home residents with dedicated volunteers for weekly video calls, creating genuine friendships rooted in curiosity, compassion, and conversation.

And the results speak for themselves.

Better Health and Wellbeing

Loneliness isn’t just a feeling – it’s a health crisis. According to the World Health Organisation, social isolation:

·       Increases the risk of early death by 25%

·       Raises the likelihood of developing dementia by 50%

·       Increases the risk of heart disease or stroke by 30%

But even one intergenerational connection can make a difference.

Research shows that older adults who take part in programmes like AAG experience a 20% decrease in loneliness.

“Loneliness has the same impact on health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.” (Public Library of Science Medicine).

Confidence, Purpose and Mental Health

For older adults in care homes, regular video calls aren’t just a social boost – they’re a lifeline. Care teams report reduced anxiety, improved mood, and higher levels of engagement among residents taking part. For volunteers, the benefits are just as powerful. They gain confidence, empathy, and a renewed sense of purpose.

“My confidence has grown so much – I’ve learned as much as I’ve given.” (AAG Volunteer)

Breaking Down Barriers

Intergenerational relationships help us see beyond age.

By connecting people with different life experiences, we promote understanding, challenge stereotypes, and build bridges across generations. These conversations are a powerful antidote to ageism.

Creating Belonging

Too many older adults live in silence.

  • An estimated 1.2 million people in the UK are chronically lonely

  • 60% of care home residents receive no regular visits

At Adopt A Grandparent, every call is a step towards changing that.

Our volunteers offer warmth, companionship, and a reason to look forward to each week.

“It gives me something to look forward to every week.” (AAG Grandparent)

Stronger Communities, One Match at a Time

When we bring generations together, we don’t just change lives – we strengthen communities. Friendships are formed. Empathy grows. Lives are enriched on both sides of the screen.

Making It Happen: The AAG Way

  • The AI-powered platform we use ensures safe, secure, and meaningful matches

  • More than 50 care homes across the UK are involved

  • £250 funds a year of weekly video calls for one older person

And with every new match, the ripple effect grows.

Whether you’re looking to volunteer, donate, or partner with us, there’s a place for you in our mission to end loneliness – one conversation at a time: www.adoptagrandparent.org.uk.
